What makes your practice more inclusive and trauma-informed?

Our therapists are incredibly mindful of inclusivity with full understanding that inclusivity is an ongoing process for us with no “end point”. We never claim to be perfect or to accommodate everyone’s needs perfectly. But we can say we are trying. We are always looking for ways to be better and we are open to any feedback as to how we can do better.

  • Accessibility: We are currently working on wheelchair accessibility for our primary location but we have a secondary location available for the time being. Just ask! We offer seated massage as well as table massage. In the case of visual impairment or blindness, we offer the option to do a verbal intake rather than a physical or digital one. We can offer assistance in getting on and off the table with the help of your therapist and/or a stool. For those who are neurodivergent, we have the option of completing in intake in a non-verbal way, as well. Shorter sessions can also be provided in order to work up to full length sessions to ensure comfort. We have a strict non-discrimination policy which prohibits any therapist, staff, or client from knowingly discriminating against any individual at the location of Rain Massage and Bodywork. This is applicable to race, color, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sex, religion, political affiliation, career choice, ability, disability, body type, size, sexual preference, neurodivergency, or origin of birth.

  • LGBTQIA+: We are LGBTQIA+ affirming and are always respectful of pronouns. We understand receiving massage can be a vulnerable experience. Being in an LGBTQIA+ safe space is important at all times, but especially in a bodywork setting. We have experience in working with individuals who are transitioning as well as those who have recently undergone gender confirmation surgery.

  • Body diversity: All bodies are good bodies! We are comfortable working with bodies of any size and shape. Our table comes with arm extenders which are applied as needed or requested to make your massage as comfortable as possible.

  • Chronic pain: For those with migraines or who are sensitive to smell, aromatherapy can be used selectively or not at all. We are also happy to make any adjustments necessary to make your session as comfortable as possible and to best fit your needs. We have invested in equipment specifically chosen to be plush and comfortable. While massage is not always indicated during acute flares of certain conditions, when safe, massage techniques can be easily adjusted each session to meet the needs of your pain on any given day.

  • Trauma: Being a safe space for those who have experienced trauma is incredibly important to us. In an effort to be a safe space for you, we have consulted with mental health professionals to support you in the best ways we know how. This includes your right to not give consent for your therapist to work on any given area. We offer the option to remain partially or fully clothed during your session. You may remain fully draped or have selective areas draped for the entirety of your session. Your therapist is happy to explain everything the session will entail prior to you getting on the table. We offer the option of establishing a safe word and safe gesture as we know how difficult verbalizing discomfort and boundaries can be. We are happy to explain where we will be going as the session progresses. For example, “I will be moving from your neck to your left arm now”. We are happy to ask for verbal consent before moving on to the next area. We offer the option for your therapist to check in regularly regarding pressure and comfort. You have full right to tell your therapist you do not like or would like to avoid any massage technique. This includes but is no way limited to: tapping motions (think quick karate chop movements with palm, side of hand, or fist), compression, shaking, vibration, jostling or stretching. At Rain Massage and Bodywork we fully understand that consent is not set in stone. You deserve the right to withdraw consent at any time during any session with or without explanation.
